An abrupt lift could harm American business.
U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai said the U.S. will maintain the previous administration’s tariffs on Chinese imports in the near term.
“No negotiator walks away from leverage, right?” she told reporters, indicating that the import levies would likely remain in place until certain trade issues with China were settled.
Trade groups that rely on materials and goods imported from China have pushed for tariffs to be quickly lifted, but the U.S. trade rep said lifting the tariffs abruptly could be harmful to American companies.
“Yanking off the tariffs,” she said, could cause a shock to companies if the plans are not “communicated in a way so that the actors in the economy can make adjustments.”
